KWWL coverage of 1619 Freedom School's African American Read-In on March 15
Waterloo, IA: Saturday, hundreds of people filled the Waterloo West High School Auditorium, for the 1619 Freedom School's African American Read-In. Several renowned Black authors were in attendance, reading from their children's books to the audience- which spread a message of love of oneself and others.
KWWL TV anchor Emma'le Maas recounts the 1619 Freedom School's African American Read-In at West High School's Kerrsenbrock Auditorium on March 15, 2025. The event will featured readings from nationally-acclaimed children's book authors Tami Charles, Derrick Barnes, and Jacqueline Woodson. The 1619 Freedom School founder and Waterloo-native, Nikole Hannah-Jones, hosted the event. More than 900 attendees took home 3,000 free books.
